                                                 P E T I T I O N

         IN FAVOUR OF KEEPING THE OLD TOWN LIBRARY OPEN,

        WITH ITS PROFESSIONAL STAFF,  AND IN OPPOSITION TO

        REQUESTS FOR IT TO BE RUN UNIQUELY BY VOLUNTEERS,

                                              OR ITS CLOSURE

We vigorously oppose the closure of Old Town Library and the proposal to replace its professional staff with volunteers from the community.

Save Old Town Library is a campaign to keep Swindon Old Town’s small library open, with its full complement of paid staff, beyond April 2009.

We were unable to rely on Councillors' statements made throughout 2008 that, if usage and borrowing increased, the library would be saved.  We have therefore needed another campaign which began in December 2008 and continues.   Nevertheless, we had great fun with 'Friends of Old Town Library' and thank all our Members for joining in dozens of competitions and events, thereby boosting usage and borrowing dramatically.

Thank you for signing the Petition which bore 1,335 signatures.  It was presented to the Mayor of Swindon on 10th February.
